Chapter 13 - Liquids Flashcards
How do you find Density? Weight Density?
Density = mass/volume. Weight Density = weight/volume.
What is Water Density? Seawater? Ice?
Water density is 1 g/cm^3.
Seawater density is 1.03 g/cm^3.
Ice density is .92 g/cm^3.
How do you find Pressure? Liquid Pressure?
Pressure = force/area. It is the force exerted over an area.
Liquid pressure = weight density x depth.
What is the Weight Density of Water?
10,000 N/m^3.
In what direction(s) will a fluid push in against an object?
A fluid will always push against an object in every direction. (Must be perpendicular!)
What is a Buoyant Force?
A buoyant force is an upward force exerted by a fluid on a submerged object.
What is the relationship between an object and the water it displaces?
The volume of the object is equal to the volume of water it displaces.
What is Archimedes’s Principle?
An immersed object is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces.
When will an object SINK?
An object will sink when it is more dense than the fluid it is immersed in.
When will an object FLOAT? Give an example.
An object will float when it is less dense than the fluid it is immersed in.
Ex. Life jackets add volume but little weight, so they lower your density and allow you to float.
When will an object neither SINK nor FLOAT? Give an example.
An object will neither sink nor float when it has a density EQUAL to the density of the fluid it is immersed in.
Ex. Fish!
What is Pascal’s Principle?
A change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to all points in the fluid.
What is Surface Tension?
Surface tension is the tendency of the surface of a liquid to contract in area and behave like an elastic membrane.
What is Capillarity?
A capillarity is the rise of a liquid in a hollow tube/narrow space.
What is Adhesion?
Adhesion is the attraction between UNLIKE substances.
