1626 - Appointed to the Privy Council as Charles had large trust in him.
1628 - Promoted to Bishop of London.
1633 - Promoted to Archbishop of Canterbury(highest position in the Church of England).

What were the main features of Laudianism, and how did they link to Catholicism?

A
  • Rejection of the ideology of predestination, Catholics believed in free will and that their actions would help them get a place in heaven.
  • Laudianism had a large emphasis on ceremony and preferred it over preaching the bible, which is very similar to Catholicism.

By 1640, how did Protestants feel about Charles? And what did Charles siding with Laudianism do and how did Puritans respond?

A

Most Protestants were united against Charles due to him siding with Laudianism, and because of this it broke the Jacobethan balance. Puritans were outraged as they opposed Laud’s religious changes.

What caused Charles to be very unpopular in Scotland

A
  • Charles on visited Scotland 8 years into his reign, making them feel like he was alienating them.
  • Scotland was largely Protestant and Presbyterian so Charles’ preference of Laudianism angered many.
  • Charles tried to introduce a new book of prayer, called the book of Common Prayer, which followed many Catholic beliefs angering and alienating a large majority of the population.
