The Second Civil War Part 1: March 1647 - May 1647
- The NMA first petitioned Parliament for the redress of their grievances. Parliament condemned this petition.
- The Commons accepted Charles’ third response to the Newcastle Prepositions, by which he conceded Presbyterianism for three years and parliamentary control of the militia for 10 years.
The Second Civil War Part 2: June 1647
- The NMA held a general meeting at Newmarket, following the Commons vote to disband them
- Charles was seized by the NMA, this now made them a significant power force in the politics of a settlement (2 June 1647)
- The NMA produced the Humble Remonstrance, declaring that they would not disband until their grievances were met (4 June 1647)
- The NMA presented their position to Parliament in the Solemn Engagement, written by Henry Ireton (5 June 1647)
- The first formal negotiation between the NMA and Charles, held in Childerley (7 June 1647)
- A letter called A Representation of the Army was written, declaring the fundamentals of the NMA’s political position (14 June 1647)
The Second Civil War Part 3: July 1647 - August 1647
- The NMA’s general Council met at Reading, to hatch a plan of taking London, this is where negotiations opened up against Ireton and Cromwell for charges of hypocrisy (16 July 1647)
- A mob invaded the Commons and forcefully passed a resolution to pass an invite to the King, inviting him to London (20 July 1647)
- The Army moved to just outside London (3 August 1647)
- The Army marched into Westminster, and on the 8th, the City of London (6 August 1647)
The Second Civil War Part 4: December 1647
- ‘The Engagement’: Charles arranged a secret meeting with a faction of Scottish Covenanters, in which they agreed to unite and attempt to invade England, in exchange for 3 years of Presbyterianism in England when complete
The Second Civil War Part 5: January 1648
After ‘The Engagement’ Parliament passed the Vote of No Addresses, stating that there would be no further negotiation with Charles whatsoever
The Second Civil War Part 6: April 1648`
The NMA gathered in prayer ahead of the battle, and declared Charles the ‘man of blood’, Number 35:33 ‘You shall not pollute the land in which you live on, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for land in which blood is shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it’

Scots invade England areas in support of Charles

- Rising in East Anglia, centred at Colchester
- Rising in South Wales
The Second Civil War Part 9: August 1648 - October 1648
- Cromwell and Lambert defeat the Scots at Preston (17-19 August)
- Cromwell and Lambert secure anti-Engager power while in Edinburgh (4-7 August)
