Calvinism
Followed the belief of predestination, was the dominant branch of Protestantism within the Church of England.
Arminianism
Also known as anti-Calvinism, it was a denomination of Protestantism whose members didn’t want further reformation of the Church of England, they were seen as close to Catholicism due to their emphasis on ceremony.
Recusancy fines
Fines imposed on anyone who did not attend church service on a Sunday.
Jesuits
A religious order seen as the aggressive arm of the Catholic Church that fought to convert Protestant countries to Catholicism under the Pope.
Hampton Court Conference (1604)
A religious conference called by James, with the only main achievement being the beginning of a new English translation of the Bible known as the King James Bible, which was completed in 1611.
Bancroft’s Canons (1604)
In September 1604, James licensed the 1604 Canons which stated that all clergy had to subscribe to all the 39 Articles and to everything that was in the Prayer Book. The House of Commons protested about legislation that came from outside of Parliament and around 90 clergy lost their livelihood.
The York House Conference (1626)
It was held in February 1626 by Buckingham and the second session of this conference was attended by Montagu. The subject of this conference was the published view of Montagu and according to Buckingham the conference had been arranged at the request of the Earl of Warwick. The York House conference was designed to defeat the prosecution of Montagu by the House of Commons.
