Chapter 7- Covalent substances Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
When non-metals join and share electrons between them.
What does diatomic mean?
The molecule can one exist on its own in a pair. For example Oxygen, Chlorine ect.
What are giant covalent structures?
Millions of atoms covalently joined to form giant structures. For example graphite and diamond.
What is the structure of diamond?
Each carbon atom forms 4 covalent bonds. A three dimensional structure is formed. All the forces of attraction are strong. It has a high melting point and is hard , it doesn’t conduct electricity as there are no delocalised electrons.
What is the structure of graphite?
Each carbon atom forms 3 covalent bonds. A layered structure is formed. 1 delocalised electron between the layers. The covalent bonds are strong, but the attraction between the layers are weak. It has a high melting point and conducts electricity because of the free electron between the shells.
