Bully
Someone who picks on individuals who are smaller or weaker
Conflict
A disagreement between people with opposing viewpoints, ideas, or goals
Labeling
Name-calling
Prejudice
A negative and unjustly formed opinion, usually against people of a different racial, religious, or cultural group
Escalate
To become more serious
Revenge
Punishment, injury, or insult to the person seen as the cause of the strong emotion
Mob mentality
Acting or behaving in a certain and often negative manner because others are doing it.
Conflict resolution
Solving a disagreement in a way that satisfies both sides
Win-win situation
An agreement or outcome that gives each party something it wants
Mediation
A process in which a third person, a mediator, helps those in conflict find a solution
Compromise
An arrangement in which each side gives up something to reach a satisfactory solution
Traits of an effective Peer Mediator?
Problem solver, easy to talk to, enthusiastic, responsible, mature, effective listener, decisive, interested, alert, trustworthy, open-minded, reliable
Steps in the mediation process?
- Parties involved in the conflict agree to seek an independent mediator’s help.
- Mediator hears both sides of the dispute.
- Mediator and the parties work to clarify the wants and needs of each party.
- Parties and mediator evaluate each possible outcome.
- Parties choose a solution that works for each of them.
Four steps in the T.A.L.K strategy?
Take a time out
Allow each person to tell his/her side
Let each person ask questions
Keep brainstorming
Ways to prevent conflicts from building?
Learn to understand your feelings. Keep your conflicts private. Avoid using alcohol or other drugs. Show respect for yourself and others. Learn to accept others. Try putting yourself in the other person's situation.
Physical signs of building conflict?
A knot in the stomach Faster heart rate A lump in the throat Balled-up fists Cold or sweaty palms A sudden surge of energy
Emotional signs of building conflict?
Feeling concerned Getting defensive Wanting to cry Not feeling valued Wanting to lash out Wanting to escape
Stress management techniques to deal with anger?
Step away from the situation.
Allow self to cool down and be quiet.
Share feelings with a trusted adult or friend who is NOT involved in the situation.
Focus your attention on something else.
Why do conflicts occur?
Can be caused by a difference of opinion over just about anything. Can occur over relationships, space, or property. Can also be about power, rewards, or privileges.
Two types of conflicts?
- Internal: take place inside your own mind
