Explain how are germs spread?
Direct contact, indirect contact, contact with contaminated food water animals or insects.
Causes of communicable diseases?
Bacteria, virus’s, fungi, Protozoa, practicing good cleanliness
How do you protect yourself against germs?
Wash hands Good hygiene Eat nutritious food Physical activity 9 hours of sleep each night Clean wounds Keep environment clean Hands away from mouth,nose, and eyes
What’s your body’s first line of defense
Skin, saliva, mucus membranes, tears, stomach acid
How does the immune system function
Nonspecific immune response, inflammation (swelling pain heat redness) inferion:protein
specific immune response,memory bank, fast
Lymphatic system , back up, maintains fluid balance, lymphocytes: white blood cells two types/ tcells and bcells, T cell: located in the thymus gland (attacks from outside)B cells formed in bone marrow(attacks from inside)
Macrophages: attach to pathogens and KILL!!!
Antibodies and Antigens?
Antigens are released by pathogens (BAD GUYS) Antibodies fight pathogens (GOOD GUYS) 2 types of T cells KILLER cells Helper cells(make more B's)
How to keep healthy?
Vaccine: dead or weak pathogen
What causes colds and how they’re treated?
When pathogens get inside you they can start a cold. You can get some OTC medicines to help relive some of the symptoms and stay at home for 24 hours until your symptoms are gone.
Some common communicable diseases?
Hepatitis,pneumonia,strep throat
Symptoms of CCDs?
Swelling, stuffy nose, itchy eyes, yellow skin/eyes, inflammation of lungs, sore throat.
Common STDs and problems they cause?
Genital herpes- painful blisters in genital area
Genital warts- warts in genital area
Gonorrhea-affects the mucus membranes
How to protect from STDs?
ABSTINENCE
Why is abstinence a good idea until marriage the best way to avoid STDs?
Most STDs are spread by sexual contact.
What is HIV/AIDS?
HIV- virus that causes AIDS
AIDS- affects the body’s natural ability to fight affection
THERE IS NO CURE
How are people infected with HIV and AIDS?
Contact with body fluids such as sperm, fluid from vagina, blood,and breast milk
