Chapter 7- Boiler Water Treatment Flashcards
What is Feedwater?
Water that is treated for use in the boiler
What is boiler water?
Water in the boiler that is used to produce steam
What is Dissolved Solids?
Are impurities such as calcium, silica, and iron that have dissolved into solutions
What is boil out?
The process of boiling a solution of water and cleaning g chemicals in a newly installed or repaired boiler
What is scale?
The accumulation of minerals such as calcium and magnesium on the water side of boiler heating surfaces
What is Silica?
A substance found in sand and some water that can form scale
What is hard water?
Water that contains large quantities of dissolved minerals
What is soft water?
Water that contains small quantities of dissolved minerals
What is a Nonadhering Sludge?
A collection of muddy mineral sediment that can be discharged while suspended in boiler water
What is Corrosion?
The rusting or putting of boiler metal
What is an oxygen scavenger chemical?
A chemical that combines with oxygen to form harmless compounds for removal from the boiler
What is Sodium sulfite?
Is an oxygen scavenger that is commonly used to treat boiler water
What is caustic embrittlement?
A condition where exposure to highly alkaline elements causes boiler metal corrosion at stress zones in the boiler
What is priming?
A condition that occurs when large slugs of boiler water are carried into the steam line
What is carryover?
A condition that occurs when small particles of boiler water are carried into steam lines
What is a High surface tension?
A boiler water condition in which the surface of the water is strengthened by a layer of impurities
What is Foaming?
A boiler water condition caused by the formation of steam bubbles trapped below a film on the boiler water surface
