Chapter 8- Boiler Operation Procedures Flashcards
What does the water column and gauge glass ensures when it’s blown down?
They are blowdown to ensure an accurate boiler water level reading and to remove any sediment that may have accumulated in the water column
Does the boiler have to be firing or shut off when the low water fuel cutoff is blown down?
The boiler must be firing
How many time should steam boiler be blown down?
At least once every 24 hours
How do you test a Low water fuel cutoff?
A low water fuel cutoff is tested by either blowing down the cutoff or with and evaporation test
What is an evaporation test?
It is used to test the Low water fuel cutoff by intentionally causing a low water condition to occur
How many times should the low water fuel cutoff be blown down?
Every shift or daily
What is a hydrostatic test?
Is a water pressure test used on a boiler to check for leaks or damage due to a low water condition or after any extensive repairs
What is a Gag?
A clamp that prevents a safety valve from popping open with out damaging the valve
What is a boiler layup?
The preparation of a boiler for out-of-service status for an extended period of time
What is Wet layup?
The storage of a boiler filled with warm, chemically treated water
What is Dry layup?
The storage of a boiler with all the water drained
What is a high water condition?
Condition caused by an excessive amount of water in the boiler as indicated by the gauge glass
What is boiler over pressure?
A condition that occurs when a boiler is operating at or above its maximum allowable working pressure
What is a Flame Failure?
A boiler condition that occurs when the flame in the boiler furnace has been unintentionally lost
What is a steam bound feedwater pump?
A pump where the entering the water flashes to steam and causes the pump to quit pumping
