Chapter 4- Steam Systems Flashcards
What are three things that Steam System accessories are used for?
They are used to collect, control, and distribute steam at the proper pressure
What Steam System Accessories have in common?
Steam valves, steam headers, heating units, steam traps, and steam strainers
What is a Main Steam Stop Valve?
Is the valve used to cut in on-line or take the boiler off-line
What is a Steam Header?
Is a distribution pipe that supplies steam to branch lines
By cutting the boiler in on-line where does the steam flow?
To cut the boiler in on-line allows steam to flow from the boiler Into the steam header
What does OS and Y valve stand for?
OS and Y valves stands for outside stem and yoke valve
What is a Outside Stem and Yoke valve?
Is a gate valve that indicates whether it is open or closed by the position of the stem
What is the ASME code for the boilers in battery?
All boilers in battery (interconnected) Must have two main steam stop valves or one main steam stop valve and one automatic non-return valve
What is a non-return valve or a automatic nonreturn valve?
Is a type of globe valve that allows a boiler to cut in online automatically when the boiler pressure is at or above the header pressure and allows the boiler to take off-line automatically if the pressure in the boiler drops below the header pressure
What happens when steam changes direction in a globe valve?
As the steam changes directions in the globe valve, flow is restricted, resulting in a drop in steam pressure
What are expansion bands and expansion joints used in steam lines?
Expansion bends and expansion joints in steam lines allow movement from expansion and contraction without causing damage to the piping
What is Lagging?
Is jacketing material used to protect pipe installations from mechanical damage
What is a heating unit?
Is a heat exchanger such as a radiator in which heat is transported by steam or hot water is transferred to air in the building space
What is a steam trap?
Is a steam system accessory that removes air and condensate from steam lines in heating units.
What is water hammer?
Is a condition where a hammering or banging sound is created in steam lines when water is carried along with the steam and hits elbows valves and other obstructions.
