Chapter 7 - ANIMAL CLASSIFICATION Flashcards
What does Generic mean
Generic is a general term or characteristic that describes an entire group, class or genus.
How are living organisms classified?
Living organisms are classified into one of five kingdoms.
What is each kingdom split into?
Each kingdom is split into smaller groups called phyla. (Singular is phylum)
What is created within a phylum?
Within a phylum, smaller divisions are created for organisms with common traits, which are called classes.
What are further divisons of classes called?
Further divisions of classes are called orders
What further subdivisions do orders have?
Order have further subdivisions called families
Within these families, an organism has a generic name called what?
Within these families, an organism has a generic name called a genus.
Members classed together under a genus that can interbreed are known as what?
Members that are classed together under a genus that can interbreed are known as species
Name the 7 Phylums.
Phylum Protozoa Phylum Platyhelminthes Phylum Nematoda Phylum Annelida Phylum Mollusca Phylum Arthropoda Phylum Chordata
The members of the phylum protozoa are: ( 3 characteristics )
The members of the Phylum Protozoa are:
- Microscopic in size
- Unicellular (single-celled animals )
- Classified by their locomotion
What does locomotion mean (not in chapter)
Locomotion refers to movement or the ability to move from one place to another.
What is motility (definition not in chapter)
Motility is the ability of organisms and fluid to move and get around.
What are the three main methods of movement for protozoans
The three main methods of movement for protozoans are:
- Whip-like tails called flagella
- Foot-like structures called pseudopods (false feet)
- Hair-like structures called cilia.
Do all protozoans move?
Other protozoans do not move at all and spores are an important part of their life cycle.
