what is the difference between acute and chronic urinary retention
acute: all of a sudden cant pass urine. this is emergency
Chronic: develops over time, builds up over months years
- inability to empty bladder completely
what is the most common cause of urinary retention in men
benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)
complications of (BPH)?
renal impairment
uti
infections
enlarged prostate
drugs used to treat bph?
drug treatment : alpha blockers - alfuzosin, doxasozin, tamsulosin
5 a reductase inhihitors - finasteride
combo of both drug classes can be used
non drug treatment - cathetor and surgery
how do alpha blockers work?
relax smooth muscle, allowing to pass urine
they can reduce BP - so first dose hypotension common espec if on BP tabs
se of alpha blockers
drowsiness, dizzy, dry mouth
hypotention, vommiting
caution of alpha blockers?
cataract surgery - floppy iris syndrome risk
