CHAPTER 7 Flashcards
NEWTONS FIRST LAW OF MOTION
an object will remain at rest or continue to move at a a constant velocity unless acted upon by a resultant force
NEWTONS THIRD LAW OF MOTION
when two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other
CLOSED SYSTEM
an isolated system which has no interaction with its surroundings
PRINCIPLE OF THE CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM
total momentum of a system remains constant before and after a collision
PERFECTLY ELASTIC
a collision where no kinetic energy is lost
INELASTIC
a collision in which kinetic energy is lost
NEWTONS SECOND LAW OF MOTION
the net (resultant) force acting on an object is directly proportional to the rate of change of its momentum
FORCE- TIME GRAPH
a graph of net force against time, with the area under the graph equal to the impulse
IMPULSE
the area under a force time graph- the product of force and the time for which the force acts
