Chapter 7 Flashcards
Cyclic electron transport
An electron transport pathway associated with photosystem 1 in photosynthesis that produces ATP without the synthesis of NADPH
Photorespiration
A process that metabolizes a by-product of photosynthesis
Photosystem 1
In photosynthesis, a protein complex in the thylakoids membrane that uses energy absorbed from sunlight to synthesize NADPH
Photosystem 2
A protein complex in the thylakoids membrane that uses energy absorbed from sunlight to synthesize ATP
Photo phosphorylation
The synthesis of ATP coupled to the transfer of electrons energized by photons of light
Primary producers
An autotroph, usually a photosynthetic organism, a member of the first tropic level
Photosystems
A large complex into which the light absorbing pigments for photosynthesis are organized with proteins and other molecules
Photo autotrophs
A photosynthetic organism that uses light as its energy source and carbon dioxide as its carbon source
Action spectrum
Graph produced by plotting the effectiveness of light at each wave length in driving photosynthesis
Absorption spectrum
A curve representing the amount of light absorbed at each wave length
Photosynthesis
The conversion of light energy to chemical energy in the form of sugar and other organic molecules
Electron transfer system
Stage of cellular respiration in which high energy electrons produced from glycolysis, pryuvate oxidation and the citric acid cycle are delivered to oxygen by a sequence of electron carriers
Reaction centre
Part of photosystems 1 and 2 in chloroplasts of plants. In light dependent reactions of photosynthesis, the reaction centre receives light energy absorbed by the antenna complex in the same photosystem
Antenna complex
The sites at which light is absorbed and converted into chemical energy during photosynthesis, an aggregate of many chlorophyll pigments and a number of carotenoids pigments that serve as the primary use of absorbing light energy in the form of photons
Light independent reactions
The second stage of photosynthesis, in which electrons are used as a source of energy to convert inorganic CO2 to an organic form. Also referred to as Calvin cycle
