Chapter 7 Flashcards
Cation
Positively charged ion
Ionic bond
When a positive ion is attracted to a negative ion.
Anion
Negatively charged ion
Octet rule
Atoms tend to loose or gain electron to obtain a full set of valence electrons.
Monatomic cat ions
Need to lose an ion.
Monatomic anions
Need to gain an electron
Poly atomic
Contain more than one atom and bonded by covenant bonds.
Binary Ionic compounds
Contain the ions of only two elements
Empirical formula
Denotes the ratio of ions in a compound
Covenant bond
When an atom shares electrons
Molecule
Group of atoms united by a covenant bond
Molecular substance
Substance that is made of molecules
Molecular formula
Describes the composition of a molecular compound and tells how many atoms are in a single molecular of the compound
Structural formula
Specifies which atoms are bonded together to each other in a molecule.
Lewis structures
Shows the sharing of a Lewis dot diagram.
