Chapter 7 Flashcards
Hypertonic
A hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of solute than another solution
Hypotonic
A hypotonic solution has a lower concentration of solute than another solution
What aids in the replacement of lost phospholipids
Exocytosis and smooth and rough ER
What is Plasmolysis
contraction of the protoplast of a plant cell as a result of loss of water from the cell.
What is Turgor?
the state of turgidity and resulting rigidity of cells or tissues, typically due to the absorption of fluid.
Define Faciliated Diffusion
the passive movement of molecules along the concentration gradient
How does ATP drive transport in cells
By providing free energy when breaking down
What is an essential lipid to membrane rigidity
Cholesterol
What are the types of membrane proteins
Integral Proteins and Peripheral Proteins
Integral Proteins
Penetrate the hydrophobic interior of the bilayer, and span it
Peripheral Proteins
Loosely bound to the surface of the membrane, often exposed to integral proteins
Turgid
When a plant cell is swollen enough to become rigid
Tonicity
The ability of surrounding solutions to influence a cells ability to gain or lose water
Plasmolysis
When a plasma membrane pulls too much water, and it dies :(
Exocytosis
When vesicles full of bulk substances fuse to the membrane and release whats inside outside of the cell
