Cell Functions Flashcards
Cytoskeleton
Reinforces the cells shape; helps in cell movement; made up of protein
Centrosome
The region of the cell where microtubules are initiated
Centrioles
Contained in the Centrosome
Flagellum
A tale-like motility structure in some animal cells. Made up of mictrotubles with an extension of plasma membrane.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Network of sacs and tubes; active in membrane synthesis and other metabolic processes.
Contains Rough ER and Smooth ER
Smooth ER
synthesis of lipids, steroids, and carbohydrates, as well as the metabolism of exogenous substances, such as drugs or toxins.
Rough ER
Produces proteins for the cell to function
Nucleus
Contains the Nuclear Envelope, Nucleolus, and Chromatin
Nuclear Envelope
A double membrane enclosing the nucleus, perforated by pores and connects to the ER
Nucleolus
A nonmembrane structure which is involved in the production of ribosomes.
Chromatin
Material which contains DNA and proteins, visible in a dividing cell as condensed chromosomes
Plasma Membrane
Membrane enclosing the cell
Ribosomes
Small brown dots which make protein, free in the cytosol or bound to the Rough ER and Nuclear Envelope
Golgi Apparatus
Organelle which is active in sythesizing, modifying, sorting, and secreting the cells products
Lysosome
Digestive organelle in the cell where macromolecules are hydrolyzed
