Corticosteroids

  • hydrocortisone

 hydrocortisone
• MOA: Reduces inflammation
• Use: Inflammatory dermatologic conditions
• AE: Stinging at site, thinning of skin (face/genitals)  do not recommend using for more than 3-5 days on face or genitals
• Do not cover with tight bandages or occlusive dressings unless instructed to do so (accelerates the rate of absorption)

  • isotretinoin (Accutane)

 isotretinoin (Accutane)
 MOA: Suppress sebum production, inhibit comedone formation and inflammation
 Use: Nodular acne
 AE: Dermatologic effects, GI effects, musculoskeletal effects, metabolic effects, psychiatric effects, etc
 BBW: Pregnancy category X (must register with iPLEDGE program); will cause fetal anomalies, must have a license to prescribe this med, must be within 2 weeks of a negative pregnancy test, must have contraception contract/must either be on contraception or not having intercourse
