MOA: Influence the reproductive system
Use: Hormone deficiency, contraception, menopause symptoms
AE: Thromboembolic conditions, menstrual disorders, GI upset, migraine headaches, dizziness, depression, edema and weight gain, cancer
BBW: Increasing CAD and reproductive cancers
Contra: Pregnancy, thromboembolic disease history, reproductive cancers, liver disease, tobacco use, history of hypertension, CAD, cerebrovascular disease
Progestins
- Provera
Provera
MOA: Act directly on endometrial lining of uterus, suppress release of pituitary hormones (inhibits ovulation), inhibits spontaneous uterine contractions
Use: Menstrual disorders (help to regulate heavy bleeding), replacement therapy
AE: Cardiovascular complications, irregular vaginal bleeding, amenorrhea, weight gain, fluid retention, ophthalmic disorders, migraines, depression, dermatologic effects, GI upset, bone loss
BBW: Do not use during pregnancy, in combination with estrogen for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or dementia; associated with increased risk of thromboembolic events such as MI, stroke, DVT, and pulmonary embolism, associated w/ increased risk of dementia in postmenopausal women
Contra: pregnancy, breast feeding, cardiovascular disease, thromboembolic disorders, renal or hepatic disease, reproductive cancers

Prototype = ortho-novum
If patient misses one dose, take right away (taking 2 in one day)
If they miss 2 pills, take one pill now and an additional one the next day (so 2 pills each day) back up contraception needs to be used for at least a week
If they miss 3 pills, stop the pack, throw it away, start a new pack at day 1 back up contraception needs to be used for at least 2 weeks
