Testosterone
MOA: Comparable to endogenous testosterone; stimulates cellular synthesis of protein
Use: Androgen deficiency states (hypogonadism)
• Usually administered as a gel, be cautious about being around women, kids, etc. so they do not have close contact and spread hormone
AE: Acne, changes in sex drive, hair loss, headache, mouth irritation/gum tenderness, edema, masculinization. In women: hirsutism, deepening of voice, menstrual irregularities
Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitor
- sildenafil (Viagra)

MOA: Relaxes smooth muscle in corpus cavernosum
• Blocks enzyme Phosphodiesterase-5
• Allows increased blood flow into penis
Use: To treat erectile dysfunction
AE: Most serious is hypotension; headache, dizziness, flushing, rash; nasal congestion, diarrhea, dyspepsia; UTI, chest pain, indigestion;
Priapism – undesired erection (longer than 4 hours) –> need to go to ER
5-alpha-reductase Inhibitors
- finasteride (Proscar)

MOA: Inhibits 5-alpha reductase
Uses: Promotes shrinkage of enlarged prostate gland
• Also prescribed to promote hair regrowth
AE: Sexual dysfunction; impotence, diminished libido, ejaculatory dysfunction
Alpha1 Adrenergic Blocker
- tamsulosin (Flomax)

MOA: Relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, enhancing ability to urinate
Use: BPH
AE: Postural hypotension, weakness, sleepiness, difficulty falling or staying asleep, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, blurred vision. May also cause abnormal ejaculation
