Chapter 6 Vocab Flashcards
Alkali metals
Soft, silvery white, highly reactive, good conductors of heat and electricity
Metals
Shinny smooth, good conductors of heat and ductile (can be drawn into a wire)
Non metals
Gases, dull solids, poor conductors of heat, opposite of metals, hydrogen is included
Hallogens
Highly reactive
Nobel gases
Extremely unreactive, Doesn’t want to give or take electrons
Metalloids
Both metals and non metals, useful in computer technology
Atomic size
Atoms get high when they go down, atomic radii increases from right to left
Ionic radius
Positive ions lose electrons and get smaller
Negative ion gains electrons and gets bigger
Ionization energy
Energy required to remove an electron from an atom, it also requires more energy to remove the second electron
Electro negativity
Indicated elements of relative ability of an element to extract elements in a chemical bond
So it wants electrons
Nobel gases
0 electron negativity
