Overlapping Social communities
Small cultural groups within a larger culture. We can belong to several: Family, School, Gender, Religion, Friends
Individualistic Culture Continuum
Freedom, Individual rights, Me-first mentality.
Collectivist Culture Continuum
Need of the group more than the needs of the individual, Loyalty, Duty
High Context Culture/Language
Focus on nonverbal cues, Open/free communication, Emphasis on surroundings/environment, Little need for explicit information
Low Context Culture/Language
Less aware of nonverbal cues, Need for details, Emphasis on verbal detail, Desire expert knowledge/logic
Power Distance
The equality or inequality felt between people in a culture.
Uncertainty Avoidance
How a culture handles change and accepts uncertainty.
Countries with high uncertainty avoidance have rules for everything!
Masculinity vs. Femininity
Some cultures have set roles for men and women, that we Americans might see as Sexism.
Long Term vs. Short Term Orientation
How a culture manages time.
Short term is everything needs to be fast, Long term is slow, take your time.

Reasons to study culture and diversity
Peace Imperative
Global community. People are dependent on each other to maintain peace.
Economic Imperative
Countries are interdependent, shaping a global economy
Technological Imperative
The world is getting smaller because of technological advances
Self-Awareness Imperative
It helps us to be more open-minded and tolerant
Ethical Imperative
This can guide us in doing what is right versus what is wrong in various cultures.
Different cultures value different things.
