Describe the Holy Spirit’s work concerning the World in general.
1) Agent in creation: Heb 1:1-2/Jn 1:3/Col 1:16/Ps 104:30/Jb 33:4
2) 3 specific acts of creation: Gen 1:1-27 - “bara” means “to create” - used 3 times - meaning to create something from nothing.
These 3 occasions represent the three great distinctive kingdoms: (a) Heavens and the earth - Gen 1:2/Jn 26:13/Ps 33:6 (b) Animal life - Ps 104:30 - refers to previous verses in Psalm: 11,12,14,17,18,20,21,25,26 (c) Human life - Jb 33:4
Describe the Holy Spirit’s work concerning Humanity as a whole.
1) The Holy Spirit witnesses to the redeeming work of Christ: - Acts 5:30-32
2) The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment - Jn 16:7-11 - (a) sin - vs. 9 - no one can produce conviction in the heart of another - Augustine: “while unbelief continues, all other sins are retained, and when unbelief departs all other sins are remitted.” (b) righteousness - vs. 10 - The Righteousness of Christ which is attested to by the fact that he was raised by the dead (c) Judgment - vs. 11 - If Christ would judge the prince of this world, then all who follow him will likewise be judged.
Describe the Holy Spirit’s work in Relation to Jesus Christ:
Christ’s person:
1) Sent to the world by the Spirit - Is 48:16-17
2) He was conceived/begotten by the Spirit - Lk 1:35/Mt 1:18/Mt 1:20
3) His reception in the temple arranged by the Spirit - Lk 2:25-30
4) His growth is attributed to the Spirit - Lk 2:40/Lk 2:52/Is 11:1-2
5) Led by the Spirit to be tempted - Mt 4:1/Mk 1:12-13 - He overcomes temptation through power of the Spirit - Mt 4:14
Christ’s earthly ministry:
