Q

What do we learn about the person who was responsible for the first sin in the Universe?

A

(1) Old Testament descriptions found in Ez 28:12-17 and Isaiah 14:12-14.
(2) In Isaiah we clearly see that the first sin was Pride/Rebellion.

Lessons from Isaiah:
(a) “I was ascend into heaven” - 3 heavens: atmospheric heaven, the stellar of the astronomic heaven and thirdly, the the highest/third heaven where God and the saints abide. (2 Cor 13:1-4).
The angel’s sphere is in the second heaven.
(b) “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God” - stars of God speak of the angelic hosts (Jn 38:7,Jude 13). Desire to secure a rulership over angelic beings.
(c) “I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north” - expresses a desire for an earthly kingdom also. (Dan 2:35)
(d) “I will descend above the heights of the clouds” - Divide glory is often symbolized by clouds - Lucifer wanted to possess this glory.
(e) “I will be like the Most High” - complete revolt against God

Q

How does Genesis 3 contradict the atheistic explanation for the current state of man’s moral condition?

A

Evolution purports to teach that man began at the very bottom of the moral ladder and is now slowly climbing upwards.

On the contrary Genesis 3 declares that man began at the very top, in the image of God, and preceded to tumble to the bottom

Q

What was the difference between Satan’s fall and Man’s fall?

A

Satan fell without any external tempter.

“Had man fallen without a tempter, he would have originated his own sin, and would have himself become a Satan.”

Q

What were the 3 results of man’s first sin?

A

(1) Concerning man’s attitude toward himself - (a) Adam and Eve became conscious of their own sin (Gen 3:7) - Pollution and Guilt - Pollution caused them to cover up and Guilt caused them to hide from God (b) They vainly sought you cover their sin (Gen 3:7) - They sewed “fig leaves” of self righteousness

(2) Concerning man’s attitude concerning God
(a) They fled from God (Gen 4:8). “There is something about sin in the human heart that forms an antipathy toward God. (b) They falsely thought they could hide from God. God comes looking for us/them! (Psalm 139:7-13;Gen 3:9;Lk 19:10;Lk 15:3-7)

(3) Concerning man’s attitude toward fellow man - Eve was content to disobey God herself alone, she must also involve her husband.Sinners are never satisfied until they have convinced others to join them in their vices! - Blame game - (Gen 3:11)

Q

How can God hold every man responsible for a depraved nature because of a sin he himself did not commit?

A

Imputation: attribute or reckon something to a person. (Philemon vs. 17-18)

Great examples of Imputation in the Bible: (1) Adam’s sin to the human race (2) Our sin to Christ (3) Christ’s righteousness to believers by faith
(1 and 3 seen in Romans 5:12-21)

Sin did not originate with Adam. It entered mankind through Adam. Sin originated with Satan.

“Adam was the natural head of the human race, so that all men were in him when he sinned. Thus we all are sinners because we sin in him.” (Pg. 164)
(1 Cor 15:22) (See Heb 7:9-10 for imputation of children made by fathers)

Sin of Adam imputed to all posterity like righteousness of Christ imputed to all those who believe.

Q

Sinful nature is called “depravity.” Depravity consisted of 4 things which are true of every individual when he is born. What are they?

A

(1) He is completely void of original righteousness (Ps 51:5)
(2) He does not possess any holy affection towards God (Rom 1:25/2Tim 3:2-4)
(3) There is nothing from without a man that can defile him; but the things which come out of him, these are they that defile a man (Mk 7:15,21-23)
(4) He has a continual bias towards evil (Gen 6:5)

16
Q

What’s the result of man’s depravity?

A

We have become numb to sin.

“Our greatest defense against sin is to be shocked at it” and when this attitude ceases sin has accomplished its direst results. (Pg. 167)
(Romans 1:32)

“When sin loses it’s sinfulness, and men take pleasure in the grossest of sinful practices, there is little hope left.” (Pg. 167)

17
Q

How is guilt defined?

pg. 167

A

“Guilt is just desserts of punishment for self determined violation of law or failure to conform to that law. It is the result of sin in relation to God’s wrath.”

(Ps 7:11/Jn 3:18,36;Ps 51:4;Lk 15:21)

18
Q

Give scriptures that support the idea of degrees of guilt/punishment.

A

The principal is recognized by the variety of sacrifices required by different kinds of sins. (Leviticus 4-7)
New Testament: Lk 12:47-48;Jn 19:11;Rom 2;6;Heb 2:2-3)

(1) Sins of nature (inborn sin inherited by Adam) and sins of personal transgression.

(2) Sins of ignorance and sins of knowledge
(Luke 10:13-14/Romans 2:12)

(3) Sins of infirmity and sins of presumption
(Psalms 19:13/Mat 26:35)
David’s sin against Bathsheba was one of impulse. His sin against Uriah was one of deliberation.

19
Q

What is the mark of sin progression?

pg. 168

A

“Progress in sin is made by a diminished sensitiveness of moral insight and feeling. The greatest of sins is to be conscience of none.”

20
Q

Define penalty.

A

“Penalty is the pain or loss which is directly inflicted by the lawgiver in vindication if His justice, which has been outraged by the violation of law.”

(Rom 6:23)

21
Q

Distinguish the difference between Chastisement and Punishment.

A

(1) Chastisement is corrective. It is never sent as punishment.
(Jer 10:24/Heb 12:6)

(2) Punishment proceeds from justice.
(Ez 28:22/Ez 38:22/Rev 16:5)

22
Q

The total penalty of sin is “death.” What are the 3 aspects of death as the ultimate penalty of sin?

A

(1) Physical death
(Gen 2:17/Heb 9:27)

(2) Spiritual death - “separation of the soul from God” (Eph 2:1/Jn 11:26)

(3) Eternal death - “the culmination and completion of spiritual death”
(Rev 21:8/2 Thes 1:9/Mat 25:41/Jn 5:28-29)
