Chapter 6 Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
4 Functions of the Muscular System
- Moves the body (via contraction and relaxation of muscle cells)
- Maintains posture (via muscle tone)
- Produces heat (from muscle cell metabolism)
- Aids in organ function and blood circulation
4 Essential substances for muscle contaction
Calcium, oxygen, ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) and glucose
3 Types of Muscle
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
Bones are
living tissue consisting of dense connective tissue, wit a network of blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves
Four functions of the Skeletal System
- framework to give the body shape and support (muscle and bone work together as a lever system)
- Bones protect vital organs
- Bones store calcium and other minerals
- Bone produces blood cells in the red bone marrow
Joints
bones are connected to them
joints contain bursae which are sacs filled with synovial fluid
Bursitis
joints become inflamed
synovial fluid
thick viscous fluid that acts as a lubricant and serves as a cushion to protect against impact and damage to the bones
Gout
a very painful join disease caused by a metabolic problem which forms uric acid crystals in the joints
Tendons
bone to muscle
ligaments
bone to bone
