Chapter 3 Vascular System Flashcards
Route around body
Arteries -> Arterioles -> Capillaries -> Venules -> Veins -> Heart -> Arteries
Arteries
Carry the blood away from the heart to the different organs and tissues of the body
3 Layers of Veins and Arteries
1st layer - endothelial cells
2nd layer - smooth involuntary muscle combined with elastic connective tissue
3rd layer - supporting connective tissue
Capillaries
smallest blood vessels
they allow blood to contract every cell in the body
allow fluids, wbc, and dissolved substances (nutrients and oxygen) to pass through the cell
Veins
BP is lower in veins
Presence of the valves plus the pressure exerted by skeletal muscle that moves the blood back to the heart
No pulse?
capillaries also smooth out the flow of blood so that veins show no pulse
3 primary veins in the antecubital area
- Cephalic
- Basilic
- Median
Vasoconstriction
occurs when the diameter of a blood vessel decreases BP increase (Contract)
Vasodilation
occurs when the blood vessel diameter increases BP decrease (RELAX)
