Why are good listening skills equally important as verbal communication skills?
Because good communication is a two way street. Good listening involves the ability to give full attention to the speaker. When you focus on a the speaker you can respond to what has been said rather than making a quick switch to the next item on your mental list.
What should you make a habit when verbally communication with a patient or colleague?
Speaking face to face so that the listener can see your eyes and read your expression. This habit encourages others to believe that they have your full attention and concern.
How is your attitude revealed to a listener?
by nonverbal behaviors, ton of voice, and choice of word. Listeners receive a more powerful message from our attitudes than from what we actually say.
Example:
No! Don’t do it that way

Look, Martha, I think this way might work better
When will employers display assertiveness?
when requiring employees to meet the requirements outlined in their job description
When will a student have the right to be assertive?
When you require assistance in a patient care situation that is beyond your ability.
What is validation of communication?
Its a response that shows you understood the instructions that were given. For example, if you are given an instruction you should respond with the elements that are essential to the duty that was appointed to you.
Example:
radilogist: Give Mrs. Johnson 50mL of Isovue 300 and take thefirst image at 60 seconds
Radiographer: Mrs johnson gets 50mL of Isovue 300 and ill take the first image at 60 seconds
Communication under stress
Lower your voice and speak slowly and clearly when a situation is highly emotional
be nonjudgmental in both verbal and nonverbal communication.
do not allow an upset individuals inappropriate actions or speech to goad you into a similar response
what should you do when dealing with a highly stressful situation?
look for help, dont try and deal with the situation alone
be pleasantly firm while explaining that youre role is to provide healthcare only
never let a combative individual get between you and the door
review such situations with your supervisor and co workers and learn how to handle threatening events before they arise
