Chapter 6 Lecture Slides (Part 1) Flashcards
7 of the 9 hormones produced by the hypothalamus…
control other hormones made by and released from the glandular tissue of the anterior pituitary
connect hypothalamus to blood/brain barrier, what is the relationship?
hypothalamus is one of the few areas of the brain that is not protected by the blood/brain barrier
________ causes an increase of blood osmolarity
dehydration
an increase in blood osmolarity stimulates _______
osmoreceptors
ADH is released in response to what?
dehydration
how is ADH released?
hypothalamus is not protected by blood/brain barrier, so it can detect changes in blood
increase in blood osmolarity stimulates osmoreceptors
osmoreceptors contain neurons that synapse with the hypothalamus
hypothalamus sends a signal to the posterior pituitary to release ADH
EtOH does two things. what are they?
- inhibits ADH secretion from the posterior pituitary
- suppresses neurological activity, which causes behavior changes
why does drinking too much alcohol cause a headache?
alcohol is a diuretic. it acts on your kidneys to make you lose more fluid than you’re taking in, get dehydrated, and that can cause headaches
how does the hypothalamus control the anterior pituitary?
produces 7 hormones that are released into the hypothalamic portal system
a portal vein comes off of a capillary bed in the hypothalamus and does what?
goes directly to a capillary bed in the anterior pituitary
