Chapter 6- Intugmentary System Flashcards
Functions of Integumentary system
1: protection=> primary barrier
-acid mantle (secretions on skin)
2: temperature regulation
-sweating and control blood flow
3: vitamin D production
-some vitamin D precursors are made in skin
4: sensation
-touch, temp and pain
5: Excretion of waste
- sweat-excess water and salts
What does dermal papillae do?
Increase surface area of basement membrane to help it stick better
What are the cells of the epidermis?
What does each cell do?
1- KERATINOCYTE- makes keratin
-95% of epidermis is keratin
2- MELANOCYTE- make the melanin(s)
-5-10% of epidermis
3- INTRA EPIDERMAL MACRO PHAGES
- less than 1% of epidermis
- moves around looking for things not supposed to be there
1-Cutaneous is skin or not skin? And consists of which layers?
2- subcutaneous is skin or not skin? Consists of which layer?
1- cutaneous is skin and consists of epidermis and dermis
2- subcutaneous is NOT skin and consists of the hypo-dermis (not skin, not apart of integumentary system)
What is a blister and what happens when you get a blister?
Epidermis (top layer) separates from the dermis (middle layer)
-happens from friction, chemical exposure, sunburns (can all make dermal papillae separate)
