CHAPTER 6: HOMEOSTASIS DISORDERS Flashcards
General Adaptation Syndrome
- what is it
- stages
NONspecific stress response
Alarm Stage: emergency reaction, fight/flight, SNS stim
Resistance Stage: body attempts to move toward restoring homeostasis
Exhaustion Stage: stressor is prolonged, adaptation not successful, marks onset of diseases
Neuroendocrine Response
coordinated release of neurohormones
- mobilization of energy
- sharp focus, awareness
- inc cerebral blood flow
SNS Response: fight or flight
inc sympathetic activity in the brain
- inc alertness, HR, BP
- dec blood flow to skin, gut, kidney
- dilate pupils
Chronic Stress Effects
- INC SNS and cortisol
- alt physio and psych function
- complications from reduced immune response
PTSD Characteristics
intrusion (flashbacks/relive traumatic event)
avoidance (emotional numbing)
hyperarousal (inc irritability, difficulty concentration, sleep disturbance)
