Chapter 6 - Equilibrium Flashcards
What is an equilibrium reaction?
Where the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backwards reaction`
What does dynamic equilibrium mean?
That even though overall the concentration of species may not seem to be changing, they are. But the rate of reactants turning into particles equals the rate of product turning into reactants so no net change is noted.
What does Kc tell us?
If the forward or backwards reaction is favoured.
High Kc equals
high numerator=more product=forward reaction
Low Kc equals
high denominator=more reactant=backward reaction
How do we calculate Kc?
concentration of reactants
power = coefficients
Define extent
The degree to which reactants are converted into products
Define rate
Indication of how fast the reaction occurs
State Le Chateliers principle
Any change that affects the position of an equilibrium causes that equilibrium to shift, if possible, in such a way as to partially oppose the effect of that change.
Ms Pengs dot points to do equilibrium shift questions
- state change to system
- state “the system will partially oppose this change to…”
- state if equilibrium shifts to the right or left.
How do we treat exothermic and endothermic reactions in equilibrium
We physically draw in heat as a…
reactant for endothermic as heat is being absorbed and used
product for exothermic as heat is being expelled.
What are the only ways to change the value of Kc?
-Changing the temperature the reaction is conducted at
~~-Physically changing the chemical equation coefficients
When there is an change in temperature it is usually always referring to the…
environment around the system
In an aqueous solution what is the surroundings and system?
surroundings= water system= actual particles
How to find coefficients of chemicals from a graph?
Look at the change in concentration
