Chapter 6-Ecology Flashcards
What is parasitism?
An interaction where one species lives in or on another species from which it obtains food, shelter an other requirements. Some parasites harm their hosts but don’t usually kill them.
What is mutualism?
Mutualism is an interaction between two different organisms that benefit both. In many cases neither species cans survive without the other.
What is commensalism?
An interaction between two species populations in which one species (the commensal) benefits from another without affecting the host.
What damage can an introduced species do?
An introduced species competes with native species for food, water and habitats. This may cause native species to die off or become endangered. Food webs are disrupted and ecosystems become unbalanced. If an introduced species strips vegetaion, erosion becomes a problem.
What is an example of an extinct species?
The Tasmanian Devil
Why did the Tasmanian Devil become extinct?
Became extinct due to over hunting and habitat destruction.
