Chapter 4-Plants Flashcards
What is cross pollination?
When plants obtain pollen from the flower of a different plant of the same species. Pollen grains can be transferred by wind, insects and animals.
What is self-pollination?
When plants pollinate themselves.
True or false. Cross pollination increases variation amongst offspring.
True.
What are the traits of an insect pollinated flower?
Flowers are attractive with brightly coloured petals and nectaries.
What are the traits of a wind-pollinated flower?
Flowers are less conspicuous with no large scented petals or nectar. The shape enables pollen grains to be shaken from the plant and carried away by the wind.
How do fruits help to disperse seeds?
Fruits help plants to disperse their seeds through:
-animals (tomatoes, grapes, apples)
-water (coconuts)
-wind (grasses and dandelions)
Some plants disperse themselves by opening suddenly and throwing seeds long distances.
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Carbon dioxide+water
Sunlight
—————> glucose+oxygen
Chlorophyll
