Chapter 6 - Chemical Bonding Flashcards
what are the properties of noble gases?
unreactive and stable. exists as individual atoms. do not combine with other atoms to form compounds. fully filled outer valence shell
what is ionic bonding?
donate/receive electrons, metal + non-metals
what is covalent bonding?
sharing electrons, non-metals + non-metals
Cl^- did chlorine give away or gain electrons?
gain
Na^+ did sodium give away or gain electrons?
give away
properties of ionic compounds?
giant ionic lattice structures, hard but brittle, high mp and bp, soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvent. conducts electricity when molten or aqueous state.
properties of covalent compounds
simple molecular structure (weak F.O.A between molecules), low mp and bp. insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvent, does not conduct electricity at all
what types of covalent structures are giant covalent structures?
diamond, graphite, silicon dioxide (sand)
