Chapter 4 - Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
1
Q
what is an atom?
A
smallest particle of an element
2
Q
where are metals and non-metals found in the periodic table?
A
metals found on the left of the staircase while non metals are on the right side of the staircase. most elements are metals
3
Q
properties of metals
A
- high mp and bp
- good conductors of electricity
- good conductors of heat
- strong and hard
- malleable and ductile
- high density
- shiny in appearance
- sonorous (makes a ringing sound when struck)
4
Q
properties of non-metals
A
- low mp and bp
- do not conduct electricity
- poor conductors of heat
- weak and soft
- brittle
- low density
- dull in appearance
- non-sonorous
5
Q
what is a compound?
A
pure substance containing 2 or more elements chemically combines in a ratio (H20, NaCl, CO2)
6
Q
properties of compounds
A
- fixed proportion
- can be broken down into simpler substances
- has very different properties from the elements that form it
- fixed mp and bp
- can ONLY be separated by chemical methods
- chemical rxn takes place whn compound is formed
7
Q
what is a molecule?
A
substance made up of 2 or more atoms chemically combined together.
8
Q
what are 2 ways to decompose compounds?
A
thermal decomposition and electrolysis
9
Q
what is a mixture?
A
2 or more substances NOT chemically combined
10
Q
properties of mixtures
A
- no fixed composition
- melts and boils over a range of temperatures
- same properties of the elements and/or compounds it is made up of
- can be separated by physical means
- NO chemical rxn takes place whn formed
