Chapter 1 - Measurement Techniques Flashcards
What is used to measure time?
stopwatch, 1-2 d.p.
What is used to measure temperature?
thermometer, nearest 0.5 degrees
What is used to measure mass?
electronic balance, 1-2 d.p.
What is used to measure volume of liquids?
beaker, measuring cylinder, pipette, burette
What is used to measure volume of gas?
gas syringe
What is the most accurate apparatus for measuring volume of liquids?
burette (pipette is exactly 25cm^3, it is not most accurate as it can only carry one amount)
What apparatus only measures an exact/fixed volume?
pipette
what is a crucible for?
heating of solids
`what are the 3 methods of collecting gas?
downward displacement of water, downward delivery, and upward delivery
When can you use downward displacement of water and examples of those types of gases?
when gas is insoluble/ slightly soluble. hydrogen, oxygen
What is the difference between downward and upward delivery?
downward delivery is used when gas is denser than air (CO2, Cl), upward delivery is used when gas is less dense than air (H2, NH3).
What is the 3 different types of drying agents, what do they dry and what is their state?
concentrated sulfuric acid, dries most gases except ammonia (extremely soluble) and its state is liquid
calcium oxide (CaO or quicklime), used to dry ammonia, cannot be used to dry acidic gases (SO2, NO2, CO2), solid state
fused calcium chloride, used to dry most gases except ammonia, solid state
