Chapter 6- Cells Flashcards
Nucleus
Control center of the cell
3 parts of the cell theory
1) all living things are created by cells
2) cells are the basic unit of all life
3) all cells come from pre existing cells.
Lysosomes
Contains waste that can break down
- waste
- proteins
- nucleic acids
- polysaccharides
Endoplasmic reticulum
Network of membranes that produce molecules
Rough ER
Makes proteins
Smooth ER
Makes lipids
Ribosomes
Cluster of proteins and nucleic acids that make proteins
Cell wall
Provides structure to plant walls
Mitochondria
Cellular respiration occurs
ATP
Adenosine tri phosphate
Main source of energy for cells
Chloroplast
Organelle found in plants where photosynthesis takes place
Cytoskeleton
Structure and mobility of a cell
Microtubule
Straight hollow tube of proteins
Gives shape and organization to a cell
Microfilament
Solid rod of protein
Thinner than Microtubule
Lets a cell change or move
Cytoplasm
Region of cell between nucleus and plasma membrane
Plasma membrane
Thin boundary in cells
Regulates traffic of chemicals
Golgi apparatus
Organelle that modifies, stores, and routes the cell products
Vesicles
Small sac that moves products around, in and out the cell
Cilia
Short structures containing Microtubules that help movement (egg)
Flagella
Long, thin, structures with Microtubules that help cells move.
Vacuole
Sac that buds from the ER or GA
Cell membrane parts
Phospholipids
Proteins
Phospholipid head
Hydrophilic (phospho)
Phospholipid tail
Hydrophobic (lipid)
What is on the proteins in cell membranes?
Carbohydrate markers
Diffusion
movement of particles of a substance
Go from high to low concentration
Osmosis
Passive transport of water across a membrane
Permeable
Only letting certain things in
Passive transport
NO ENERGY
Active transport
USES ENERGY
Hypertonic
Higher level concentration of solute
Hypotonic
Having lower concentration of solute
Isotonic
Having the solute be equal to the other solution (water)
Pathway of a protein
Nucleus- sends information Ribosome- constructs proteins Rough ER- makes/ folds proteins Vesicles- carries proteins to the GA Golgi apparatus- packages and sends proteins.
Endocytosis
Membrane take material into the cell and forms a vesicle
Exocytosis
When the vesicle bonds with the membrane and releases the material out.
