Chapter 6- Attention Flashcards
How does attention affect response time?
Attention increases response time.
How is spatial attention affected by pre-cueing?
Pre-cueing reduces reaction time
What ties form, colour, motion, depth, and location all together?
Attention
Which stream of vision tell us the ‘what’ of objects?
Ventral stream
Which stream of vision tells us the ‘how’ of objects?
Dorsal stream
What is the binding problem?
How neural activity in different areas of the brain combine individual features of an object to create our perception of a coherent object
What is Anne Treisman’s FIT theory?
Feature integration theory
What is the basis of the Feature Integration Theory (FIT)?
Binding requires attention
What is the Preattentive stage in Anne Treisman’s Feature Integration Theory (FIT)?
Before we focus on the object
No attention is given to the object–> just unconscious, effortless thought.
The features of an object (ex. color, height, shape) are all independent thoughts
What is the focused attention stage in Anne Treisman’s Feature Integration Theory (FIT)?
Where serial processing occurs, the features are combined
this occurs just after the preattentive stage
What are the stages of the feature integration theory?
- seeing the object
- preattentive stage- parallel processing
- focused attention stage- Serial processing
- Perception
What area of the brain does Balint’s syndrome effect?
Parietal lobe
What effect does Balint’s syndrome have on a patient?
Patient will not be able to focus and shift attention when multiple objects are present in a scene.
Ex. if there was a brown cow and a blue feed trough they would perceive a brown feed trough a blue cow
What question does the feature integration theory answer?
How do we perceive individual features as parts of the same object?
