Chapter 6: Assessment Of Problem Behavior Flashcards
PROBLEM BEHAVIOR
Actions such as aggression, self-injurious behavior (SIB), property destruction, tantrums, or other behavior that can be dangerous or disruptive. (*Not a core symptom of autism, but high in prevalence.)
FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
A process in which antecedents and consequences are manipulated during brief sessions to demonstrate a functional relationship between problem behavior and environmental events.
FUNCTIONAL RELATION
Problem behavior happens when and only when a certain contingency is in place.
CONTENT OF FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
Purposely arranging one or more text conditions that may evoke problem behavior, and then purposely providing reinforcement following the problem behavior.
PURPOSES OF OPEN-ENDED INTERVIEW
- Discover EOs
- Discover target responses
- Discover reinforcers
ECOLOGICALLY RELEVANT
Conditions that emulate what happens in the subject’s natural daily environment.
FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS: CONTOL CONDITION
Provide free access to all reinforcers being evaluated in the test condition. If precursors or problem behavior occur, do not change anything.
FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS: TEST CONDITION
Remove all reinforcers present in control condition simultaneously and as quickly as possible. By withholding reinforcers, you creat EOs for them. Present EOs until precursor or problem behavior occurs, then immediately provide all reinforcers briefly.
FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION TRAINING (FCT)
Teaching individuals to appropriately request the reinforcers for their problem behavior.
FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION RESPONSE (FCR)
Appropriate request for a synthesized reinforcer.
FCT: SCHEDULE THINNING
- Deny some instances of the FCR
- Teach an appropriate response to denial
- Teach alternative responses/activities while waiting for the preferred reinforcer
COMMUNICATING-TOLERATING-COMPLYING
INTERMITTENT REINFORCEMENT
Each of the different behaviors (FCR, tolerance, compliance) is reinforced immediately some of the time.
UNPREDICTABLE REINFORCEMENT
Subject is not told in advance what behavior will lead to reinforcement.
