Chapter 6 Flashcards
When does the most rapid physical growth take place?
1st year of life
Childs Average Weight at the end of the first year
25 pounds
Proximodistal Development
(Inner to outer), Growth and motor development proceed from the center of the body outward.
Why are babies heads so large in proportion to their body size?
The brain grows rapidly before birth, a newborns head is disproportionately large.
Benefits for breastfed babies
1) Are less likely to contract infections such as diarrhea respiratory infections, otitis media (infection of middle ear)
Have a lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome and of postneonatal death
Have less risk of inflammatory bowel disease
Have better visual activity, neurological development, and long term cardiovascular health
Are less likely to develop obesity, asthma, and eczema, diabetes etc
Are less likely to show language and motor delays
Score slightly higher on cognitive tests are school age and into young adulthood
Have fewer cavities and are less likely to need braces
Central Nervous system
Brain and spinal cord (A bundle of nerves running through the backbone)
Left Hemisphere of the brain
Is concerned with language and logical thinking,
Two kinds of brain cells
Neurons and Glia.
What are neurons
Or nerve cells send and recieve information
What is Glia
Or Glial cells, nourish and protect the neurons
Synapses
is the junction between two neurons or nerve cells where there is a small gap that neurotransmitters help nerve impulses to cross.
Brain Development- Differentiation
Differentiation is the process by which cells acquire specialized structure and function
What is reflex
Automatic involuntary innate response to stimulation
What does the Denver Developmental Screening test assess
Screening test is given to children age 1month to 6 years to determine whether they are developing normally
What are gross motor skills
Physical skills that involve the large muscles
