How are bipolar and depression experiences markedly different?
They have different etiologies, separate sections in the DSM-5
What are some emotional symptoms of depression?
Sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, worthlessness, or low self esteem. Limited enthusiasm for things that previously brought joy or pleasure. Irritable, anxious, worried
What are the cognitive symptoms of depression?
Rumination, inability to concentrate, remember things, or make decisions and thoughts of suicide
What are the behavioral symptoms of depression?
Fatigue, social withdrawal, crying for no reason/excessively and possible agitation and restlessness
What are the physiological symptoms of depression?
Appetite and weight changes, sleep disturbance, unexplained aches and pains, aversion to sexual activity/reduced interest or arousal
Hypomania
Increased levels of activity or energy, impulsivity or risk taking, and may talk excessively
Mania
Even more pronounced mood change than hypomania, variety of behaviors from euphoria to extreme irritability, marked impairment in social or occupational functioning, and loss of contact with reality
Elevated Mood
Exaggerated feelings of energy and wellbeing
Expansed Mood
Sense of Self Importance
Psychosis
A condition involving a loss of contact or distorted view of reality
Pressured Speech
Rapid, frenzied communication
Flight of ideas
Rapidly changing or disjointed thoughts
Physiological symptoms of Mania
Decreased need for sleep, high levels of physiological arousal, increased libido, weight loss
