Chapter 6 Flashcards
Adaptive Optics
Reshapes a mirror using a guidestar to get a sharper image.
Doppler effect
A change in the frequency and wavelength of a wave that is emitted by or reflected from a body in motion with respects to the observer who measures the waves.
Electromagnetic wave
An electric and magnetic disturbance that travels through space and transparent material.
Energy Flux
Rate at which the wave carries energy through a given area.
Interferomtry
Signals from widely separated radio dishes are combined to produce the resolution of a telescope as large as the distance between the two dishes.
Reflection
The bouncing of a wave from a surface
Refraction
Bending of light when it passes from one material to another.
Spectroscopy
Light is dispersed according to wavelength. Then its brightness is measured over narrow regions of the spectrum.
detector
measures light
diffraction
blurring of image which occures whenever waves encounter an obstical or opening
dispersion
the separation of light according to wave length
frequency
rate at which wave creasts pass a fixed point
index of refraction
the difference in the speed light travels through different subtances
reflectivity
the ability of a surface to reflect electromagnetic waves 0%-100%
spectrograph
measures the spectra of celestial objects
