Chapter 6 Flashcards
DEFINE
Person-Enviroment Fit
the assessment of whether personal resources are sufficent enough to meet the demands of an enviroment and its stress
EXPLAIN
What is General Adaptation Syndrome?
a theory based around explaining how our bodies respond to stress, displayed through 3 phases
LIST
What are the 3 phases of General Adapation Syndrome?
- Alarm (mobilization to respond to stressor)
- Resistance (Efforts to cope with stress)
- Exhaustion (Failure to overcome threat and depletion of resources)
WHO, WHY, WHERE?
Who came up with the general adaptation syndrome?
Hans Selye
LIST
What are some criticisms of general adaptation syndrome?
- Assigns a limited role to psychological factors
- Assumption that stress is uniform
- Assesses stress as an outcome of the general adaptation syndrome running its course aka: Stress is only present after entering the exhaustion step
EXPLAIN
What is the theory of Tend-and-Befriend?
The idea that in addition to the fight or flight response, humans may also respond to stress with social and nuturant behaviours
EXPLAIN
What hormone is believed to play a part in female’s response to stress?
Oxytocin
due to its effects being influenced by estrogen
EXPLAIN
How does the cognitive transaction model of stress define Stress?
A relationship between a person and their enviroment that is assessed by the person as exceeding their resources
DEFINE
Primary Appraisal of stress
An assessment of an event to determine its implications and any possible risks
determining risks
DEFINE
Secondary Appraisal of stress
The assessment of if our resources are sufficient to overcome any risks or challenges posed by the event
determining resource usage
EXPLAIN
The Unease Modulation Model
A model designed to explain the dynamic nature of stress in simple language to present stratagies for coping with stress for the general public
LIST
What are the 2 aspects that affect how people react to stress?
- Reactivity
- Allostatic Load
DEFINE
Reactivity
The degree of change that occurs in autonomic, neuroednocrine and/or immune responses as a result of stress
DEFINE
Allostatic Load
The physiological cost of chronic exposure to heightened neural/neuroendocrine responses that results from chronic stress
EXPLAIN
Why are ambiguous events considered to be more stressful than clear-cut events?
Due to being ambiguous, energy has to be devoted to trying to assess the event, ontop of the possibility of needing to also respond correctly to the event
DEFINE
Habituation
The diminishing of physiological or emotional responses to a repetitive stimulus
EXPLAIN
What is an Acute Stress Paradigm?
A method used to study stress; where you arrive to the lab to participate in a unrelated study and then are suddenly assigned an unexpected task
EXPLAIN
What is the Social Readjustment Rating Scale?
A questionnare that is scored based on points related to events a person has experienced in the last year, to determine the amount change that has occured in the individuals life in the past year that may have resulted in stress
