Chapter 6 Flashcards
Consists of a group of interacting individuals of the same species that occupy a specific area at the same time.
Population
Individuals vary slightly in their genetic makeup.
Genetic Diversity
Refers to the number of individuals added to the population through reproduction. Usually described in terms of birth rate, the number of individuals born per one thousand individuals per year.
Natality
The number of deaths per year. Usually discussed in terms of death rate, the number of people who die per one thousand individuals per year.
Mortality
Refers to the numbers of males and females.
Sex ratio
The proportion of individuals in each age group in a population.
Age structure
The number of individuals of a population in a certain space at a given time.
Population density
The spatial dispersion in which the members of a population are found in their habitat.
Population dispersion
Populations vary in their capacity for growth, also known as the __________.
Biotic potential
The rate at which a population could grow if it had unlimited resources.
Intrinsic rate of increase
The number of individuals of a given species that can be sustained indefinitely in a given space (area or volume).
Carrying Capacity (K)
This type of survivorship curve is flat during early and middle life and drops suddenly as death rate increases among the elderly.
Type I
Is intermediate, with mortality more constant over life spans.
Type II
Shows very high death rates for the young, followed by lower death rates.
Type III
Species that reproduce early in their life span and produce large numbers of usually small and short-lived offspring in a short period of time.
