Chapter 6 Flashcards
Fimbriae
Attacment structures on the suface of some prokaryotes
Nucleoid
Region where the cell’s DNA is located (not enclosed by a membrane)
Ribosomes
Complexes that synthesize proteins as instructed by genes
Plasma Membrane
Membrane enclosing the cytoplasm
Cell Wall
Rigid Structure outside the plasma membrane
Capsule
Jellylike outer coating of many prokaryotes
Flagella
Locomotion organelles of some bacteria
Cytosol
Jellylike semifluid substance that suspends the components of the cell.
Chromosomes
Carry genes in the form of DNA
What is the difference between eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells?
In a eukaryotic cell, most DNA is inside the nucleus bounded by a double membrane.
In a prokaryotic cell, DNA is concentrated inside a region that is not membrane bounded called the nucleoid.
