Q

what is the pathway of encoding?

Sensory register-short term memory-long term memory
B/w each stage: some lost, some continues onto….

Q

If an image is played on the screen and then quickly removed, explain the process of how we would react?

A

The image will fade out of memory fairly quickly about half a second. This is because we experience a brief sensory memory of the visual stimuli aka the image on the screen. This is called Iconic, a subgroup within our sensory register within encoding. OVERLAPPING

Q

If I ask someone: what were you saying? But them I remembered what they said and answer back there question. What is this an example of?

A

Basically, when we hear something we retain that information for about 2 seconds, that’s why we can quickly remember what the person said at the moment even if we don’t recall it immediately. By the time we say: what were you saying?, we processed the sensory memory of auditory stimuli aka called choice, subgroup within our sensory register.

Q

If I forgot to study right before a quiz, and I spend the 20 minutes before the quiz studying. What form of encoding am I doing?

A

When you study you are encoding information that will stay in your short-term memory. In the moment we say it last 30 seconds, but in this case it lasts for about as long as the quiz is. Here we remember the beginning, noticeable middle, and end

Q

If I am memorizing my phone number 917- 708-3307, what type of encoding am I doing?

A

Chunking-organize items into manageable single unit(Ex: years), this is kept by your short term memory

Q

If I am saying Piaget, 10x times to remember how to say it. What type of encoing am I doing?

Q

If something really embarrassing happened in class like I stuttered. What type of encoding?

A

Emotional memories are encoded better(not if too emotional), part of short term memory within encoding

Q

When I am cutting a bagel and preparing it, what type of encoding am I doing?

A

Part of your long term memory because the information comes naturally, engrained. This means it’s part of your implicit knowledge, specifically procedural: Non conscious, knowledge of how to do something

Q

When I remember the fiirst time I saw my crush Adrian in school, what type of encoding did I do?

A

Since this is engrianed in my memory, it’s part of my long-term memory. More specifically since I consciouslyl recall it, it’s part of my explicit knowledge. Since it’s a rare even it’s apart of Episodic: Knowledge of events in your life

Q

If asked : What si the first president of the united states.? And I say George Washington, what type of encoding did I do?

A

Since i remember it forever, its’ part of my long-term memory. Since it’s a conscious recall it’s more of explicit knowledge, and sicne it’s general information that I know, it’s Semantic: General knowledge, not linked to time or place

Q

The second step to memory is what and what process does it use?

A

Memory games, Mnemonics:Any learning technique that aids information retention, using vivid imagery and organization are most effective

Q

If I have 10 words on the screen, and ask you to identify whether eahc has capital letters or not. At the end, I ask you to remember what words you recalled. Why might you recalled few words?

A

death of processing: not focusing on the right material,:Information rehearsed at simple levels will not be stored or remembered as easily as information rehearsed at meaning based levels, uses incidental learning when people are not consciously remembering the info.

Q

When studying for a large exam with a lot of material, what is the borad over view of study plan layout?

A

mneumonic Spacing: Distributed practice yields better long-term retention that massed process

17
Q

If I map out the plotline of a movie in 2 sentences , what type of method am I using?

A

mneumonic, schemas Script for what should happen, pattern of knowledge in memory that organizes information and guides memory Ex: Egulac/seals, general outline

18
Q

If I am using a lion to recall the top down process what type of menumonic am i using?

A

mneuomic,Networks of Association: Use vivid/entertaining images/familiarity.

19
Q

If I’m trying to remember the name of a girl, and I see that she is always wearing a red shirt. I’m more liekly to remember Sarah in the red shirt, as a result of…

A

mneumoic,priming-activation, often unconscious, of particular associations
in memory,The processing of information is facilitated by prior
exposure to the same or similar information

20
Q

If retrieval subjective or objective?

A

subjective

21
Q

What type of memory will my flashbulb memory have?

A

Snap shot or short movie of a clear memory of an emotionally
significant moment or event like my wedding

22
Q

Give me a list of mneumonics

A

priming, schema, networks of associations, spacing, depth of processing
