Ch 4 pp 122-142, 158-159 Flashcards

1
Q

How does riding a roller coaster reflect our use of consciousness?

A

Immediate awareness of internal(thoughts/sensations) like how scary the roller coaster is and external stimuli(environment) how high it is and whether my seat belt is secured correctly.

Q

This phrase is T/F: People are very good at multitasking

A

False because they simply do not know how many errors they make, level of absorption in either stimuli decreases because we have limited capacity to focus.

Q

Immediate awareness of internal(thoughts/sensations) and external stimuli(environment)If I were to travel from New York to China, why might my circadian rhythm change?

A

Due to the time difference, when I arrive in China, it will be very light outside and yet I was expecting it to be dark so I can go to sleep. Thus I experience jet lag and feel sick. This is because my exhausted body can’t depend on visual cues like light to indicate sleep. Instead I might have to stay awake and then take melatonin, to regulate my sleep schedule. My day would extend the usual cycle of 24.2 hours

Q

I am experiencing a dream where I’m chased by a dinosaur , what type of sleep will I be involved in?

A

Such a dream makes me feel scared because of the vivid imagery, I would be involved in REM sleep.(Rapid Eye Movement)

Q

Using this electroencephalograph, explain how my sleep process would look like.

A

1.At NREM and REM, I’ll feel drowsy and have Beta(fast) and Alpha waves(slow), from there on I progressively get deeper in REM sleep
2.N1 which goes from “drowsiness to light sleep” which has a mixture of Alpha and Theta waves lasts about 90 minutes
3. N2 which is “true sleep” see Sleep spindles(brief bursts brain energy), K complexes(single-high voltage spikes of briana activity)
4: N3 which is deep sleep where you’ll see Delta waves

Q

If I’m really sick after breaking up with my boyfriend, why might I benefit from going to sleep?

A

Sleeping will regulate my stress hormone levels, immune and metabolic systems which will help if I’m sick. More importantly it can often leading me to condense memories and find solutions, especially if I wondering about whether I should ask him to get back together

Q

WHich sleeping disorder totally regards the circadian rhythm?

A

Narcolepsy because at random times you briefly fall asleep and can’t control your movement, doesn’t depend on visual cues like darkness.
