Acculturation
Process where two cultures come into contact, changing one or both groups
Colonialism
Form of domination by controlling groups. Done by exploiting their language and culture
Deafhood

Heritage Speakers
People who comprehend their native language, but can also struggle with spoken/written articulation
Indigenous Peoples
People who originally lived in the land, but where forcibly removed
Collectivism vs. Individualism
Welfare of group over individual vs. welfare/needs/preferences of individual over group
Trilingual Interpreter
Possesses fluency in three separate languages and cultures. Must have knowledge related to unique aspects of distinction between cultures and ability to interpret them successfully
Cultural Sharing
How family members or cultural players pass culture, traditions, experience to next generation
Interpreters working in settings with Indigenous people
Understand it is an honor to be present at special events, be aware that your presence will impact setting in + and - ways, seek assistance from designated indigenous coordinator, prioritize use of Deaf tribal members’ signs, obtain consent to be present, and ask what attire is appropriate
Equality
Move toward fair and equitable treatment. Must begin and continue w/ non-POC working alongside each other, befriend and advocate on behalf of Deaf and hearing POC
