Chapter 52 Intro to Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
the scientific study of the interactions between organism and the environment
abiotic
nonliving, factors influence the distribution and abundance of organisms
biotic
living factors - the other organisms that are part of an individual’s environment
population
is a group of individuals of the same species living in an area
community
is a group of populations of different species in an area
Ecosystem
all the organisms in a given area as well as the abiotic factors with which they interact (one or more communities and the physical environment around them)
landscape
an area containing several different ecosystems linked by exchanges of energy, materials and organisms
June Solstice
Summer solstice where the northern hemi is summer
December Solstice
Winter solstice where the northern hemi is winter
biosphere
the entire portion of earth inhabited by life; sum of all the planet’s ecosystems
trade winds
a wind blowing steadily toward the equator from the northeast in the northern hemisphere or the southeast in the southern hemisphere
rain shadow effect
when warm, moist air approaches a mountain, the air rises and cools, releasing moisture on the windward side of the peak
lake effect
snow is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when cold winds move across long expanses of warmer lake water
macroclimate
large scale patterns in climate; the climate of an entire region
microclimate
climate patterns on a very fine scale, such as the specific climatic conditions underneath a log
