Chapter 50 Flashcards
Bifid uvula
cleft of the uvula of the soft palate that divides the uvula into two parts
Cheiloplasty
surgical repair of a lip defect
Cleft lip
unilateral or bilateral congenital fissure of the upper lip, usually lateral to the midline; can extend into one nostril or both and may involve the alveolar process; caused by a defect in the fusion of the maxillary and globular processes
Cleft palate
congenital fissure of the palate caused by failure of the palatal shelves to fuse; may extend to connect with unilateral or bilateral cleft lip
Haberman feeder
specialty bottle used for infants with cleft palate
Nasoalveolar molding technique
treatment used for unilateral and bilateral cleft palate to reduce the severity of the cleft in the maxillary gingiva or alveolar ridges and to reduce the deformity of the nose
Obturator
prosthesis designed to close a congenital or acquired opening, such as a cleft of the hard palate
cheilorhinoplasty
plastic surgery of nose and lip
Craniofacial
pertaining to the cranium, the part of the skull that encloses the brain and face
dentally dysfunctional
abnormal functioning of dental structures
graft
tissue that is transplanted and expected to become a part of the host tissue
heredity
genetic transmission of traits from parents to offspring
orthognathic surgery
surgical repositioning of all or parts of the maxilla or mandible
orthopedics

habilitation
same goals and objectives as rehabilitation, but for a person with acquired disability for whom the ability to achieve maximum physical and psychologic fitness is acquired for the first time
speech aid prosthesis
prosthetic device with a posterior section to assist with palatopharyngeal closure
syndrome
combination of symptoms either resulting from a single cause or occurring so commonly together as to constitute a distinct clinical picture
tracheostomy
creation of an opening into the trachea through the neck
velopharyngeal insufficiency
anatomic or functional deficiency in the soft palate or the muscle affecting closure of the opening between mouth and nose in speech
velum
covering structure or veil
velum palatinum
soft palate
